COMMUNITY INVITED TO LEARN ABOUT LA GRANDE MAIN STREET -
posted on 06.06.09 by Mike Surber

The City of La Grande Main Street Program is inviting the community to attend a gathering to mark its first six months of success and to share ideas for what’s to come. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 6 p.m. in the Cook Memorial Library Community Room. The public is invited to participate.

This event will mark the first time all four Main Street Committees (Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring) have held a joint meeting since forming in February. It will also mark the first Community Meeting since the “Kickoff” event in late January. Participants will have an opportunity to hear updates on what the program has accomplished so far and what’s to come in the next year.

Each chair person will present its committee’s work plan for the next year, followed by a work session among all four committees to discuss and discover coordinated efforts among their respective work plans and begin a prioritization process. This will be followed by a question and answer period.

“Not only will the public have an opportunity to learn what has taken place over the past six months and what is planned for the next year,” says Charlie Mitchell, the City’s Community & Economic Development Director, “they will also have the opportunity to engage with the Main Street committees as they coordinate and prioritize their work plans.” Mitchell further notes that in addition, this is an excellent time for those citizens who have not yet actively participated in the Main Street program to consider doing so. Information on each committee and sign-up sheets will be available at the meeting.

The highlight of the meeting for some, however, will be saved for last, as a special awards ceremony is planned. The downtown building façade improvement projects selected to receive all or a portion of the current $14,167 of state and local grant funding will be announced at the close of the event. In addition, a special “Friends of Main Street” award will be presented.
